Asylum Application (Form I-589) and Supporting Documents (if applicable)

Asylum Application (Form I-589) and Supporting Documents (if applicable):

Form I-589 is the application used by foreign nationals to request asylum in the United States. In immigration court proceedings, individuals who fear persecution in their home country on account of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion may file Form I-589 to seek protection. The application must be accompanied by supporting documents that help establish the individual’s identity, their past persecution or well-founded fear of future persecution, and the nexus between the persecution and one of the protected grounds. Supporting documents may include personal statements, witness affidavits, country condition reports, expert opinions, and evidence of physical or psychological harm. The asylum application and supporting documents will be carefully reviewed by the immigration judge to determine the individual’s eligibility for asylum or other forms of protection, such as withholding of removal or protection under the Convention Against Torture.
