Request for Production of Documents

A Request for Production of Documents is a form of written discovery in a medical malpractice lawsuit, in which one party requests that the opposing party produce certain documents or tangible evidence related to the claims or defenses in the case. The request may cover a wide range of materials, such as medical records, billing records, policies and procedures, or correspondence between the parties. The responding party must produce the requested documents or object to the request on specific grounds, such as relevance, privilege, or undue burden. The purpose of requests for production is to allow the parties to obtain relevant evidence and to prepare for depositions or trial, and the documents may be used as exhibits or to impeach witnesses.
