Debt Validation Request
Debt Validation Request
A Debt Validation Request is a legal document sent by a debtor to a creditor requesting that the creditor provide proof of the validity and amount of a debt that is being collected. The request must be made in writing and must be sent within a certain time period after the debtor receives an initial communication from the creditor regarding the debt. The creditor must respond to the request within a certain time period and must provide the debtor with a copy of the original contract or other document that evidences the debt, a statement of the amount owed, and the name and address of the original creditor if the debt has been transferred. If the creditor fails to provide the requested information or fails to respond to the request, the debtor may have grounds to dispute the debt or to seek other legal remedies. The Debt Validation Request is an important tool for debtors to ensure that they are only being asked to pay valid and accurate debts.
