Section 504 Plan

Section 504 Plan

A Section 504 Plan is a written document that outlines the accommodations, modifications, and services that a student with a disability will receive to ensure equal access to education programs and activities. Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in any program or activity that receives federal funding, including public schools. To be eligible for a Section 504 Plan, a student must have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as learning, reading, concentrating, or thinking. The Section 504 Plan is developed by a team that includes the student, their parents, teachers, and other relevant school staff, and is based on an evaluation of the student’s needs. The plan may include accommodations such as extra time on tests, preferential seating, or assistive technology, as well as modifications to the curriculum or grading. The Section 504 Plan is an important tool for ensuring that students with disabilities have equal access to education and are not discriminated against based on their disability.
