Privacy Rights

Privacy rights are the legal protections that ensure tenants’ right to exclusive possession and control over their rental unit, free from unreasonable intrusions or surveillance by the landlord or others. Landlords have a limited right to enter the rental unit for specific purposes, such as making repairs, showing the unit to prospective tenants or buyers, or addressing emergencies. However, landlords must typically provide tenants with advance notice of the entry (usually 24-48 hours) and enter only during reasonable hours, unless there is an urgent threat to health or safety. Tenants have the right to deny entry to the landlord if proper notice is not given or if the entry is not for a legitimate reason. Landlords cannot use their right of entry to harass or intimidate tenants or to invade their privacy without justification.
