Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP)

A Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) is a site-specific document that identifies potential sources of stormwater pollution and describes the best management practices (BMPs) that will be implemented to minimize or prevent the discharge of pollutants from a construction site or industrial facility. The SWPPP is typically required by federal or state stormwater regulations as part of the permitting process for construction activities or industrial operations that discharge stormwater to surface waters. The purpose of the SWPPP is to ensure that stormwater discharges from the site do not cause or contribute to violations of water quality standards or other environmental impacts. The SWPPP typically includes a site description, a site map, an inventory of potential pollutant sources, a description of the BMPs to be implemented, and a plan for inspections, monitoring, and recordkeeping. The document should be developed and implemented by qualified personnel and should be updated as necessary to reflect changes in site conditions or operations. A Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan typically includes erosion and sediment control measures, good housekeeping practices, spill prevention and response procedures, and employee training and education. The document should be clear, concise, and accessible to site personnel and regulators. Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans are an important tool for managing and reducing the impacts of stormwater runoff on water quality and aquatic ecosystems.
