Marriage Certificate (if applicable)

Marriage Certificate (if applicable)

A marriage certificate is an official document that proves the legal union of two individuals. In immigration court proceedings, a marriage certificate may be necessary to establish a foreign national’s eligibility for certain forms of relief from removal, such as adjustment of status based on marriage to a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. The marriage certificate should be issued by the appropriate government authority and may need to be accompanied by a certified English translation if it is in a foreign language. The validity and bona fides of the marriage may also be scrutinized by immigration authorities to ensure that it was not entered into solely for immigration purposes.
