Copyright Registration Application

A Copyright Registration Application is a form submitted to the United States Copyright Office to officially register a creative work, such as a book, song, or software program, and secure legal protection for the copyright owner. The application requires information about the work, including its title, author, creation date, and publication status. It also requires a copy of the work to be deposited with the Copyright Office. Registering a copyright provides the owner with a public record of their claim, the ability to sue for infringement, and potential statutory damages and attorney’s fees if successful in an infringement lawsuit. While copyright protection exists from the moment a work is created, registration offers additional legal benefits and is required before filing an infringement suit.
